## What we look after

### Year-end accounts

Statutory accounts prepared from your records, filed at Companies House on time, and explained in plain English so you know what the numbers say about your business.

### Corporation tax

Your company tax return prepared and filed with HMRC, with reliefs and allowances checked and a clear view of what is due and when. New to this? Read our [CT600 guidance](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/ct600-guidance).

### Self assessment for directors and owners

Personal tax returns covering salary, dividends, rental income and investments, with advice on paying yourself in the right way. The 2025 to 2026 return is due online by 31 January 2027: see our [Self Assessment deadline guide](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/self-assessment-deadline).

### Sole traders and partnerships

Accounts and tax returns for self-employed people and partnerships, and advice on when it makes sense to become a limited company.

### Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Sole traders and landlords must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC once their qualifying income (gross self-employment and property income, before expenses) passes the threshold:

* from 6 April 2026, if it was over £50,000 on the 2024/25 tax return
* from 6 April 2027, if it was over £30,000 on the 2025/26 tax return
* from 6 April 2028, if it was over £20,000 on the 2026/27 tax return

We check which tax year applies to you, whether you meet the threshold and whether an exemption is available, then get your records and software ready and file the quarterly updates for you. Read our [Making Tax Digital for Income Tax guide](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/making-tax-digital-income-tax), including the quarterly deadlines, or see [HMRC's eligibility guidance](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-youre-eligible-for-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax).

### Planning, not just reporting

We look at your figures before the year end, so you can make decisions while there is still time to act.

## How it works

1. **What we need from you**
Access to your accounting software or your records, bank statements and any information on assets, loans and dividends.

1. **What we handle**
We prepare the accounts and tax returns, raise any questions with you, and deal with Companies House and HMRC.

1. **What you receive**
Accounts and returns to review and approve, a summary of what is due and when, and a conversation about what the numbers mean for next year.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you take over from my current accountant?

Yes, at any point in the year. With your permission we contact your previous accountant for the handover information and pick up from where they left off. Read [how switching accountants works](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/switching-accountants), or see the [signs you've outgrown your accountant](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/outgrown-accountant-signs).

### Do you only work with limited companies?

No. Our focus is growing businesses, but we also look after sole traders, partnerships and landlords, including self assessment and Making Tax Digital.

### How much does it cost?

We agree a fixed fee based on the size and complexity of your business, so you know the cost upfront. Anything outside the agreed work is quoted before we start.

### Can you help with more than the year end?

Yes. Many clients add bookkeeping, payroll, VAT and management accounts as they grow. See our [finance function service](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/finance-function).

### Do I need an accountant, or is software enough?

For a simple set-up, such as a sole trader with one income source, software can be enough. Once you have a limited company, several income sources, VAT, staff or investors, an accountant is more likely to pay for itself. Read [when software is enough and when it isn't](https://elmfinancial.co.uk/do-i-need-an-accountant).
